Applique Overlay

Layer hearts, stars, leaves, and custom shapes on top of your pieced quilt design. Position them freely, assign your real fabrics, and see exactly how applique will look before you stitch.

What It Does

Applique Overlay adds a second design layer on top of your pieced quilt blocks. While your design wall handles the traditional piecing underneath, the applique layer lets you place decorative shapes anywhere on the surface: a heart centered on a nine-patch, a vine trailing along a border, or a star cluster in a negative space.

Each shape can be positioned, resized, and rotated with simple drag-and-drop controls. Assign any fabric from your library to each applique piece to see exactly how your chosen print or solid will look at that size and angle. QuiltWall includes a library of common applique shapes like hearts, stars, leaves, circles, and diamonds, and you can also import your own custom SVG files for unique designs.

The layer system lets you control which shapes appear in front of or behind others. Stack a small circle on top of a larger leaf, tuck a stem behind a flower, or build up complex layered designs the same way you would with actual fabric and fusible web.

How to Use It

  1. Switch to Applique Mode

Click the Applique button in the toolbar. The overlay layer appears on top of your existing pieced design, ready for shapes.

  2. Add Shapes

Choose from the built-in shape library (hearts, stars, leaves, circles, diamonds) or import a custom SVG. Each shape appears on the overlay, ready to be positioned.

  3. Position, Resize, and Rotate

Drag shapes anywhere on the quilt surface. Use the handles to resize and rotate each piece until it sits exactly where you want it.

  4. Assign Fabrics

Click any applique shape and assign a fabric from your library. The shape fills with your fabric image so you can see how the print direction, scale, and color work at that size.

  5. Reorder Layers and Review

Use the layer controls to bring shapes forward or send them back. Switch back to the normal view to see your complete quilt design with the applique overlay in context.

Tips & Tricks

🎨

Audition fabric direction. Rotate an applique shape to see how a directional print (stripes, plaids, or novelty prints) looks at different angles before committing.

Import custom SVG shapes. If the built-in library does not have the shape you need, create one in any vector editor and import it as an SVG. QuiltWall will treat it like any other applique shape.

📐

Use snapshots to compare with and without applique. Save a snapshot before adding applique shapes, then compare the plain pieced version against the appliqued version side by side.

🌳

Build complex designs in layers. Create a flower by layering circles for petals, a smaller circle for the center, and a long oval for the stem. The layer ordering system lets you control exactly which pieces overlap.

Add Another Dimension

Layer applique shapes on top of your pieced design and see how it all comes together.
